It’s midnight and you want to go out for a bite in the city... There are several food junctions which are open till the wee hours.

“Even though it’s not safe to go out at night in the city, the stalls near Jama Masjid are quite safe after dark, as long as you have your vehicle,” says Surbhi Dubey, a college student.

Most of these 24x7 food joints are not limited to call centre employees now, as youngsters and families can be spotted getting a bite at road-side joints.

"We see at least 100 customers every night, mainly people on their way to the railway station and young people looking for a bite after a night-out.

Our joint itself is popularly known as ‘kadi chawal’ and people enjoy our rajma-chawal as well,” says Pawan Jain who runs a food joint in front of Shivaji Bus Terminus at Connaught Place.

Given the infamous reputation that the city has for crime, especially after the December gangrape last year, several joints which were earlier open through the night have been forced to shut down for a few hours after midnight.

Nevertheless, the loyalists can still be seen thronging their favourite roadside joints for a meal late at night or early in the morning.

“For famished souls like us who work graveyard shifts, these late-night dhabas are a boon,” says Parth Dadhich, a call-centre employee in Gurgaon.
