An hour after two carjackers robbed a driver of his car on Monday, the police shot dead one of them at a village near Narela.
The criminals, who are yet to be identified by the police, had robbed one Bhuvan of his Ford Endeavour SUV car at gunpoint. Bhuvan had parked his car near Sachdeva School in Rohini Sector-13. Around 2.15 pm, the duo arrived there and fled with the car after threatening Bhuvan with a gun.
Bhuvan called up the police control room and alerted his employer, the owner of the car.
"All the police stations in the district were alerted about the robbery and instructed to intensify the checking of vehicles, especially Endeavour SUVs, at police check posts. Instructions were issued to increase police presence at border points also," said Sanjay Kumar, additional commissioner of police (outer).
Around 3.30 pm, during checking at the Ghogha crossing, constable Baljit and constable AS Bohara spotted a white Ford Endeavour without a number plate going towards Sannoth village.
Suspecting that the number plate might have been removed by the accused, they started chasing the vehicle after taking a lift from a passing vehicle. Seeing police behind them, the carjackers panicked and rammed the SUV into a wall on a narrow road.
"The constables surrounded the SUV and asked the accused to come out of the vehicle. A scuffle ensued between them and in the melee one of the robbers opened fire on the police. Constable Baljit suffered a bullet injury on his right thigh. He fired back with his service pistol, shooting one of the accused," said Kumar. The other carjacker managed to escape.

{{/usCountry}}The injured robber was rushed to Maharshi Balmiki Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A country-made pistol, five live bullets and two empty cartridges were recovered from the spot. Baljit was taken to a private hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger.
