The elder son of Cuban President Fidel Castro has said that his father is on the mend and remains in good spirits.

"He is recovering, I see him recovering," Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 54, told reporters on Saturday in the Chilean city of Valdivia, 800 kilometres south of the capital of Santiago.

"He is in good spirits and optimistic," Castro Diaz-Balart said. He did not elaborate.

The Cuban president has not appeared in public since undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in July. He temporarily ceded power to his younger brother, Defence Minister Raul Castro.

Cuba has released little information on Fidel Castro's condition. Dr Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, a Spanish surgeon who has treated Castro, said the 80-year-old Cuban leader does not have cancer and is recovering slowly from a serious operation.

Castro Diaz-Balart, a nuclear scientist, was in Chile for the inauguration of a scientific research centre.

On Friday, he attended a dinner hosted by President Michelle Bachelet.
