The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has added a new concession to its list of existing exemptions for physically challenged students. And this one’s pecuniary in nature.
CBSE has decided to waive the fee paid by special category candidates for using the help of an amanuensis (writer) during the Class X or XII Board exams, Controller of Examination MC Sharma told HT.
“Till last year, these students had to pay a nominal charge of Rs 100 per day for using the help of a writer during the examination. So if the student needed a writer for five subjects, he or she would end up paying a fee of Rs 500. The Board has decided to incur this expenditure on the student’s behalf,” Sharma said.
The move is a bid to further alleviate problems faced by the physically challenged students gearing up to the take the tests in March.
“Anything that helps the performance of a special child is a great idea,” said Shyama Chona, DPS R.K. Puram principal, in response to the Board’s new concession.
Apart from a slew of exemptions provided for a candidate during the exam, CBSE also ensures that the answer sheets of such students are corrected separately at the regional offices.
Last year, CBSE had announced a new plan to allot additional time for special category students to answer the exam. They are given 60 minutes extra for a paper of three-hour duration, 50 minutes for a paper of two-and-a-half hours and 40 minutes for a two-hour paper.
