Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking removal of pollution from river Ganga, the Allahabad High Court has directed the state government to provide details of sanctioned money for the forthcoming Magh Mela.
The Magh Mela, one of the biggest religious congregations of the world, is organized every year since time immemorial on the bank of Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati. Lakhs of pilgrims assemble here and stay for a month during this period to have holy dip in the river Ganga in order to attain salvation.
The court also expressed its concern on the non-functioning of Sewage Treatment Plant and has asked the General Manager Ganga Pollution Control Unit and Jal Nigam to file their respective affidavits before the court.
The court has also asked that in the affidavit, the progress report about the Central Government's project has also to be explained by the next date i.e. December 6, 2020.
Earlier, at one stage, while hearing this public interest litigation (PIL), the Court had directed the authorities concerned to take appropriate measures like cleaning of ghats and removal of polythenes from there as the Magh Mela is going to commence at Allahabad in January 2011.

In this PIL, the court has been requested to direct the authorities concerned to remove pollution from river Ganga. Further, a request has also been made to direct the authorities concerned to release adequate water into the river Ganga so that pilgrims can properly take a holy dip into it.
