The Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court on Friday stayed the suspension of two of the five Meghalaya legislators who withdrew support from the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance leading to its ouster and imposition of President's Rule earlier this week.
The single-bench court of Justice T Vaiphei scrutinized the suspension of former Urban Affairs Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Independent MLA Limison Sangma from the Assembly before passing the interim order. A ruling on the other three - former Health Minister Advisor Pariong, Sanbor Shullai and Ismail R Marak - is scheduled on Monday.
Speaker Bindo M Lanong had suspended the five barring them from the trust vote last Tuesday. The NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance had won the trust vote 28-27 in the 60-member House, but the Congress challenged the floor test and paraded 32 MLAs before Governor RS Mooshahary. The Governor subsequently recommended PR, which was accepted by the Centre.
