Virtually rejecting CPI's demand for a review of Left support to the UPA government, CPI(M) has made it clear that it will continue to support the Congress- led coalition to keep away "communal forces" from power.

"There will be political instability in the country if we withdraw our support to the UPA government which will ultimately benefit the BJP," CPI(M) polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury told reporters in Ballia.

"The Left parties will not allow the BJP to succeed in its designs," he said last night.

CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan has said that the Left as a whole should review its backing to the UPA government, whose policies only seek to help the BJP and go against the common man.

On the election of the next president of the country, Yechury said his party would take a decision after the declaration of results of UP assembly elections.

The decision of the Left parties in this regard would depend on the results of UP polls, he said adding that his party would strive to ensure unity among secular forces.

Asked whether Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee would be preferred by the Left for the top post, Yechury said, "we have not yet given thought to it."
