Underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim is the most real and potent threat to the life of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only terrorist taken alive during the November 26 Mumbai strikes, Mumbai crime branch sources said.
Ever since he was arrested, intelligence reports have indicated threat to Kasab's life.
Ibrahim, who works closely with the Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, was the only source through which Kasab could be targeted in Mumbai. A resident of Faridkot in Pakistan’s Punjab, Kasab is in the custody of the crime branch.
"The enemy country would always want to eliminate Kasab because he has become a noose around their neck. They would try everything they could," an officer, who didn’t wish to be identified, said.
Barring a couple of instances when he was lodged at the Arthur Road jail for three days each for an identification parade, Kasab remains in the custody of crime branch at an undisclosed location.
His applications are heard within the crime branch premises. The crime branch, citing security concerns, had filed an application requesting the magistrate to hold proceedings within its lock-up.
Now, the crime branch and jail authorities are working on a plan on where to lodge Kasab during the course of trial. "We know the security risks and have enough security to take care of Kasab,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said.
