Doctors stitch together slit neck of attacked driver

Doctors at Gurgaon’s Artemis Hospital saved the life of a 22-year old man whose throat was slit by a miscreant on his neck on Friday night. Sanjeev K Ahuja reports.

Doctors at Gurgaon’s Artemis Hospital saved the life of a 22-year old man whose throat was slit by a miscreant on his neck on Friday night.

Naveen Kumar, a driver, had had his voice box, food passage and major blood vessels cut through and had lost about 2 litres of blood when admitted he was hospitalised at1 am.

Since the crime scene was just a kilometre away from the hospital, the victim reached soon, or else it could have been fatal, hospital officials said.

Kashmeer Kumar, the Naveen’s elder brother, said his brother was sleeping at the taxi stand near Kanhai village when someone attacked him with a dagger. The attacker has since been arrested.

“The patient will take at least a month or maybe more to recover completely,” said Dr M.C. Misra, head, AIIMS trauma centre. “The next 24 hours are extremely critical and if he lives on, it will be very good.”

A team led be Dr Deepak Sarin took four hours to stitch the split voice box, food passage and blood vessels. “During the surgery, Naveen also lost one more litre of blood,” said a hospital spokesperson.
