Relatives of the deceased alleged foul play as the bodies did not seem to show any signs of struggle to escape from the flames.

A relative said that he had heard the children cry but it was too late before he could shout for help.

The family was living in Karaoura village, which lies on the outskirts of Ludhiana.

The dead adults have been identified as Mohammed Manzoor and Nazima Khatoon.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has expressed grief at the incident and has asked the district administration to arrange for their cremation.
