A Shanghai-bound Air India flight (AI 348) from Mumbai carrying 172 passengers made a precautionary landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here on Saturday after it developed a technical snag.
“The pilot detected a problem in the hydraulic system and informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) for permission to land under emergency conditions,” said an ATC official.
“It was way back in the queue and we allowed the precautionary landing.”
According to sources, the Airbus-A 330 landed normally but got stuck while taxiing to the base. It was later towed to the bay even as airport officials kept emergency paraphernalia such as fire tenders and ambulances ready.
“It was a precautionary landing and all passengers were safe,” an Air India official said. “Soon after shifting passengers to terminal they were shifted to another aircraft for their journey to Shanghai.”
Sources say that the pilot got faulty readings of the hydraulics of the plane and requested an emergency landing.
Incidentally, this is the same flight that was involved in a near collision with a Jet Airways flight at Mumbai airport on May 31.
