Faltu my tribute to cinema of 70s: Arindham

Management guru Arindham Chaudhry's latest venture in Bengali releases all over India this Friday. The film has been directed by veteran filmmaker Anjan Das.

In these times when the "pure cinema" characterising the "parallel films movement" in the 70s has given way to cinematic ventures which are a mix of elements of "art and commercial cinema", making a purely art film, that too with rank newcomers, may seem a risky proposition.

For management Guru Arindham Chaudhry, however, it is primarily a "love for cinema" that led him to make the Bengali film Faltu.

Releasing on Friday across the country, Faltu, directed by veteran Bengali filmmaker Anjan Das, who earlier produced the much-acclaimed Iti Srikanto, is unlike Arindham's earlier production venture Rok Sako To Rok Lo, which was an out-and-out commercial film. Based on Bengali novelist Syed Mustafa Siraj's novel Ranir Ghate Brittanto, Faltu, is part of Planman Motion pictures' (the film production venture by Prof Chaudhry) endeavour to create meaningful cinema based on literary marvels by famous novelists.

"It is a film we have ventured into purely for the love of cinema", Prof Chaudhry said after a screening of the film in New Delhi on Wednesday night.

Also present at the screening of the film at the film divisions auditorium at Mahadev road were the film's lead pair, newcomers Yash and Manjari and the director Anjan Das.

The movie tells the story of a young man Faltu, who, all of a sudden, one day realises that he has no identity of his own. Based in a village called Ranirghat near Murshidabad in West Bengal, the film traces Faltu's emotional turmoil, his search for identity and his process of rediscovering himself. Besides Yash and Manjari, the film also stars Bengali actors Indrani Haldhar and Soumitro Chatterjee.
