Stung by public criticism that police was going soft on the MIM leaders who launched a murderous attacks on Taslima Nasreen, the police have finally registered a case against Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM MLA, who had threatened to kill her if she visited Hyderabad again.
After obtaining permission from a local magistrate, the Panjagutta police station registered a case under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC against the MLA.
However, police sources said that they have not arrested the MLA even 24 hours after registering the case.
The police is also seeking magistrate's permission to book cases against Majeedullah Khan Farhat, leader of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) party, a bitter rival of the MIM in the old city, who stated that their party had planned to kill the Bangladeshi writer but the MIM foiled their plan by attacking her with books and flowers. Police sources said that they may book a case under Section 506 IPC against the MBT leader.
Meanwhile the Urdu newspapers published from the city have joined the political war over Taslima. The largest selling Urdu paper, whose editor was attacked by a MIM activists few months ago, published a picture of MIM leaders throwing flowers at her and asked scornfully if this was the way they were trying to kill Taslima. This and another Urdu paper are running a campaign to criticise the MIM and expose its "real motive".
The MIM's own daily newspaper, which is valiantly trying to counter the campaign, had to take Taslima's help to prove to the readers that MIM was sincere in its attack on her.
