A major fire broke out in sales tax office in Lakhanpur area of Kanpur, reducing most of the records to ashes, a fire service official said on Sunday.

The fire broke out at the third floor of the office Saturday night, however, no one was injured, chief fire officer SK Singh Kushwaha said.

Eight fire tenders were pressed into service which took over four hours to douse the flame, he said, adding "the reason behind the fire may be short circuit but we are probing."
