Metro commuters travelling to and fro Gurgaon have a reason to feel safer. A dedicated police station, headed by a woman station house officer (SHO), was opened at the MG Road Metro station on Friday. Sub-inspector Poonam Singh, the station house officer, is supported by 20 police officials, including five women constables.
The station is expected to provide additional security and quick help to passengers, especially women. This is the first Metro police station in Gurgaon while Delhi has nine such set-ups. The city police will also set up assistance booths at each of the five Metro stations in Gurgaon.
“With a lady officer heading the establishment, women will feel more comfortable to lodge a police complaint. We will also give them a receipt so they can track the status of their complaint. The receipt will mention a complaint number, name, date and type etc,” said Vikas Arora, DCP (east), Gurgaon.
“The presence of policemen in addition to paramilitary personnel provided by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will make commuters, especially women, feel more secure,” said Arora.
He added that all the five Metro stations will have a police booth and 10-12 staffers will be deployed. “Earlier, commuters had to go to police stations of respective areas in case they needed help. Now, all Metro stations in Gurgaon will be under police watch. The step will certainly give a sense of relief to women who are often targeted by eve teasers,” the DCP said.
