Malaysian driver Afiq Ikhwan Yazid claimed an incident-filled race in Round 11 of the JK Tyre Asia Series at the Yas Marina Circuit here on Saturday to edge closer to series leader Lucas Auer of Austria in the overall standings.
This was the Meritus GP driver's fifth win on the trot in the series (that until last year, used to be known as Formula BMW Pacific), which will also be a support race at the inaugural Indian GP. With the win Yazid further reduced the gap to championship leader to 28 points.
Auer, the nephew of former F1 race winner Gerhard Berger, climbed from tenth on the starting grid to finish second, just ahead of Malaysian driver Nabil Jeffri. The race was marred by two Safety Car periods, the first after an incident at turn 6 on lap 3 when Auer tried to make a move on the inside of Aaron Chang. Auer's front wing touched Chang's rear tyre causing Chang's car to crash sideways into the wall.
Almost immediately after the Safety Car pulled in, Indian driver Raj Bharath oversteered at turn five and got caught in the barrier leading to a second Safety Car period.
