Former AIADMK minister moves designated CBI court

Former AIADMK minister Alagu Thirunavukarasu on Wednesday moved a designated CBI court to be discharged from the Rs two crore 'Birthday Gift Case', in which former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is the main accused.

Former AIADMK minister Alagu Thirunavukarasu on Wednesday moved a designated CBI court to be discharged from the Rs two crore 'Birthday Gift Case', in which former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is the main accused, on the ground that there was no evidence to prove that he had handed over demand drafts for an amount of Rs 25.50 lakh to the AIADMK supremo.

The designated Judge ordered notice to CBI and posted the petition for hearing on October 27.

According to the CBI, Jayalalithaa had accepted 89 demand drafts drawn on various banks worth Rs two crore on the occassion of her birthday in 1992. While Thirunavukarasu had presented his leader with DDs worth Rs 22.50 lakh another former minister K A Shengottaiyan, also arraigned as an accused in the case, had presented Jayalalithaa with DDs for an amount of Rs 22.53 crore.

There was no material to show that he had handed over the DDs to Jayalalithaa in person or deposited them in her account. Further there was no material to prove that he had given the DDs inconnection with any proceedings or business transaction, Thirunavukarasu contended.
