Four policemen were injured in stone pelting by a group of workers following the death of a co-worker, leading the law enforcers to fire in the air to disperse them near in Kurnool on Sunday.
Over 500 workers from Orissa and Bihar hurled stones and hit police personnel with sticks while protesting the death of a labourer at an under-construction cement factory in Gadivemula village.
Four policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, suffered minor injuries, police said, adding the mob also damaged several vehicles.
The labourer, Ram Parida (30), a native of Balizuru in Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa, died after falling from a height of about 35 feet at the construction site last evening, they said.
Other workers demanded compensation for his family and the company constructing the factory agreed for the same.
However, trouble broke out following a communication gap between the workers and management on handing over of Parida's body. Enraged over it, the workers indulged in violence near the factory premises, Kurnool District Superintendent of Police Ch Shrikant said.
When the police intervened, the workers pushed them aside and indulged in heavy stone pelting. A Sub-Inspector present on the spot fired one round in the air to scatter them, he said, adding the situation was now under control.
