Tamil movies are being shown free in old people's homes and orphanages in South Africa courtesy an initiative by a group of Tamilians here.
The orphans and abandoned elderly people are the beneficiaries of a move by a non-profit organisation to screen free shows of the latest Tamil films to promote Tamil culture.
The Creative Minds Indian Group (CIMG) aims to coordinate events to bring together the south Indian community in the Gauteng province here to keep their culture alive in a fun environment. The film shows contribute to this sentiment.
"People were a bit sceptical initially about the free shows. But after the first screening, we got a lot of calls from people," said Pamisha Pillay of the group.
Explaining the name of the group, Pillay said: "We wanted to be broader than just south India. The 'creative' part came about because it wasn't just about organising and coordinating, there was a bit of creativity involved as well."
The events have been put together mainly from sponsorships and personal contributions by the 13 founder members of the organisation.
