Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday announced that 30 per cent of the allocations of some major ministries would be focused on programmes for women.

Presenting the Budget for 2006-07 fiscal in Parliament, Chidambaram said so far 32 ministries have set up gender budgeting cells.

He said it is proposed to have 30 per cent allocation of some of the key ministries focusing on programme for women. This would see an allocation of Rs 28,737 crore for gender budgeting.
So far 23 ministries have placed specific demands for grants for programmes with focus on improving the health, education and other facilities catering to the needs of women and children, he said.
