Unable to tell the definition of ‘Sangam’ (a religious spot at the confluence of rivers), a Class 2 girl lost the vision of her right eye after a school teacher pricked a pin in her eye at Katghora-based school in Korba about 220 km from the state capital.
The incident occurred when the accused teacher of Saraswati Shishu Mandir Parasram Bhaina during the school hours was conducting question-answer session with the students.
During the classroom period, he asked Shweta Patel the meaning of Sangam that she failed to answer following which Bhaina scolded her. "As if the rebuking was not enough, the infuriated teacher pierced the pin, which my daughter was perhaps holding in her hands, into her right eye", said Devprasad Patel, father of the girl.
Shweta rushed home bleeding from the wounded eye and narrated the incident to her parents. The parents had a brawl with Bhaina. To escape the fury of parents and people the accused teacher admitted his misdeed and promised to bear the cost of eye treatment of the injured student. However he later absconded. The parents lodged a complaint to police against the teacher.
Korba collector Ashok Agrawal told Hindustan Times that he had asked the police to trace the guilty teacher. “The incident is shocking and sub-divisional magistrate has been asked to investigate it”, said the collector however he refused to take any action against the school.

{{/usCountry}}Traumatized Shweta was taken to Raipur immediately in the hope of getting better cure for the damaged eye. But unfortunately all efforts by the ophthalmologists here failed to restore the vision of her right eye. According to team of eye-specialists the extent of injury left no scope of recovery of the lost eyesight.
