A piquant situation has arisen in Rajasthan as the Centre has asked the state government to clearly spell out whether it wants the inclusion of Gujjars in ST category or not?
In a letter written to chief secretary Rajasthan government DC Samant, union ministry of social employment has instructed the state government to clarify the contents of the letter sent by it about the Gujjars demand to get ST status.
The Centre says the Rajasthan government simply forwarded the Gujjars' case besides attaching the ethnographic details contained in the Chopra Commission’s report.
The chief secretary confirmed the receipt of the letter on Monday, adding that the government would study it before sending the reply to the Centre.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had signed an agreement with Gujjar leader Col Kirori Singh Bainsla on June 18 and accepted the major demand to recommend their case to the centre to include the community in the ST category. It had agreed to give 5 per cent reservations to Gujjars and asked the Centre to include the community in the 9th schedule. A resolution was passed in the state assembly which was not opposed by any party, including the Congress.
A letter was sent to the Centre by the government on July 28 which did not have any clarity on the Gujjars’ demand for ST status.
