AK Hangal died of cardio respiratory failure, a condition he was suffering from but which got aggravated after he sustained a hip fracture on August 13 following fall at his residence.
Until Saturday, the actor was critical and kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Doctors said that Hangal was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic renal disease, which got aggravated after his fall.
"His deteriorating condition did not allow us to perform a hip replacement surgery. When he was brought to hospital we shifted him to the ICU where he was put on a ventilator. For a brief period he started responding to the treatment following which he was weaned off the ventilator," said Dr Koulsoum Houssein, intensivist and physician, Asha Parekh hospital.
However, his condition suddenly started deteriorating and since his family was not keen on aggressive treatment, the doctors did not put him back on the ventilator. He was provided oxygen support.
"He died of cardio-respiratory failure. I have been treating him since the past 30 years. He was a disciplined patient and would turn up for his appointment on time," said Dr Vinod Khanne, orthopedic surgeon, Asha Parekh Hospital.

{{/usCountry}}The actor is survived by his 76-year-old son and his family. Hangal, who began his career in 1966, became famous for his role as a grieving father in the film Sholay.
