Harmison, who was ruled out of the third and final Test now on here, would be flown home, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said.
Matthew Hoggard, who was to return home after the Test series, would now take Harmison's place in the one-day side.
"Stephen (Harmison) is still experiencing pain in his right shin and with the Test Series against Sri Lanka due to start in early May, we have decided that the safest course of action is to rest him from the forthcoming One-Day Series here in India," ECB chief medical officer Peter Gregory said..
"He has been advised to rest the injury pending a further re-assessment in the UK."
