Sources said the Haryana government had ordered termination of inter-state bus service on 12 routes from Faridabad and Ballabgarh depots a few days ago. The services were formally stopped from May 1.

The step evoked strong protests from roadways employees. The terminated routes are Beijnath, Hamirpur, Shimla and Dharamshalla—in Himachal Pradesh, Nainital, Rishikesh, Hardwar in Uttaranchal, Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, Jaipur in Rajasthan, Aligarh, Mathura in Uttar Pradesh etc.

“The routes were not financially viable and it was decided that services in all such routes be terminated from May 1,” said Tarun Kumar, General Manager, Haryana Roadways, Faridabad.

The workers countered. “The routes were highly profitable and we strongly protest termination of the inter-state bus services,” said Ram Asray, organising secretary of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union. “Our protests will continue,” he said.

The employees protested on Wednesday and Thursday and demanding restoration of the inter-state bus services.

No takers for city buses

The buses, procured over two years ago, were gathering dust for want of drivers. Now though the state government has deputed 150 drivers run the buses, they are running empty apparently because people don’t know about the service.

The city bus service was introduced after the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad cleared the routes to the transport department.
