Shiksha Bharti Senior Secondary School, a CBSE-affiliated school run by a right-wing organisation in Aryanagar here, has issued a circular forbidding girl students of Classes 8 to 12 from wearing skirts. They have been asked to wear 'salwar-kameez' from the next academic session.
Some girl students HT spoke to said the school authorities had told them that this had been done to "ensure their safety".
Clarifying the school's stand, principal Dr Nirmal Popli said, "It's not a ban but a dress code which is being followed in all the schools run by our management committee across India. We had been receiving complaints of unnecessary trouble because of girls who were coming to school wearing short skirts."
Popli said the school had taken the decision in consultation with parents, and most of them had welcomed it. "Some girl students had raised an objection to the new dress code, but we asked them to come to school with their parents to discuss the issue."
Speaking in favour of 'salwar-kameez', the principal said it could be really embarrassing for girls if their skirt gets torn while riding a two-wheeler or playing games during school hours.
Satish Sindhwani, president of the school management, said they had made 'salwar-kameez' compulsory because girls were not comfortable doing yoga and attending the morning prayers in skirts.
