The Human Rights Commission of Maldives has blasted the government for not giving enough aid to ameliorate the rights situation in the country, the Minivan News reported on Friday.

The 2005 annual report released by the commission says that the government has failed to fulfill responsibilities entrusted upon them to protect rights of the citizens under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," the declaration states.
The report further says that an official human rights policy came into being only after a public outcry following the custodial killings of inmates in 2003.
