THE BHOPAL Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC), which seemed to be limping back to normalcy following the recent 40-day strike, may once again plunge into crisis. Not because of any agitation this time round but because of bulk resignations of senior and junior resident doctors.
Since the hospital staff resumed duty barely a week ago, six resident doctors have already resigned. The five senior residents, who have put in their papers, include Makarand Hisare of neuro-medicine department, Mahesh Rathore of pulmonary medicine department, Dr Saifullah Tipu of anesthesia department, Dr Nitin Doar of cardiology department and Dr Preeti of ophthalmology department. Besides, a junior resident Dr R Meena has also resigned.
More than half a dozen resident doctors are likely to follow suit in the next week, informed hospital sources. “We had a dream about our career and this hospital both. But the outcome of the recent agitation has conclusively proved that nothing could happen for our betterment or that of the hospital”, said a senior resident doctor.
The manner in which the agitating staff was ‘forced’ to concede to all the preconditions of the BMHRC Trust before they were taken back in job seems to have injured the self-esteem of the staff.

{{/usCountry}}“Not just the resident doctors but the paramedical staff is also looking for other avenues”, the doctor said. The senior consultants, who preferred to stay with the management during staff agitation, are also looking for greener pastures. According to information, many of them are said to have applied at the state-of-the-art hospital planned at Pune by a prominent industrial house.
