Forty-six people died and 600 were hospitalised in Nicaragua after drinking illegal liquor tainted with methanol, the ministry of health reported.
The first deaths were registered on September 3 in the western province of Leon and in Managua, the ministry reported on Tuesday.

The bootlegged alcohol is believed to have originated from neighbouring El Salvador.
Police seized 100,000 litres of the "fire water" and arrested 11 people for distributing the illegal sugarcane liquor.
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol and can cause blindness and death even in small amounts.
Bootleggers sometimes add it to strengthen their batches of liquor.
