IN AN interactive session with students of National Institute University (NLIU), former Chief Justice of India Justice J S Verma said law was an instrument to achieve justice. He further said law plus X is equal to justice where X stands for morality.
Legal methods alone cannot control corruption; inculcating values in individuals to respect law was as imperative, he added. Stressing on the need for transparency in governance, he said right to information was a step in the direction of removing the dichotomy between the governed and the governing.
Earlier, in his welcome address, director NLIU, Prof Balraj Chauhan described Justice Verma as an outstanding jurist, who delivered landmark judgements like the Vishakha case and the Neelbati Behera case.
Justice Verma also gave away the second year team the winners’ trophy and the fifth year team the runners up trophy in the recently held intra-university football tournament. He also gave away prizes for the ‘Jus Cultura’ debate competition. The first prize went to Avinash Jha, Deeksha Manchanda second, Swati Rai third and Tanuj Hazari stood fourth.
In another function held earlier, Chief Justice of Republic of Maldives Rasheed Ibrahim addressed NLIU students. Fondly remembering days of his primary education in Bhopal, Justice Ibrahim talked of the influence of Indian Constitution on the new Maldivian Constitution framed in 1998.
