Fifteen-year-old Rani Devi, who made her debut on Saturday night, opened India's account in the ninth minute. After that, the visitors came close to double the lead but squandered numerous scoring chances.

Russia came out with more purpose in the second half and drew parity with Anna Guteneva in the first minute after the break.

However, a determined Indian team got the lead again through Jasjeet who scored a field goal midway through the second half and then Pritamrani Siwach sealed the match just two minutes before the hooter.

In other matches of the day, the US beat Belgium 3-2, while Netherlands Antilles blanked France 2-0.
