An Indian American has been selected for the Maryland Library Association's (MLA) Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for 2006.
Joginder Singh, 81, has been involved with various US libraries and other voluntary services since he immigrated to the country in 1983. He became a US citizen in 1991.
The award will be presented to Singh in May.
MLA was founded in 1923 to promote library service in Maryland. Among its members are libraries, library staff and trustees, school students and friends of libraries representing the full spectrum of librarianship in Maryland.
In addition to his voluntary service, Singh has also established the Joginder Singh Scholarship for Excellence in Library Science, a programme providing financial aid to a needy and deserving student pursuing a course in Library Science, Indian ethnic newspaper Indiawest reported.
"Singh has led Montgomery county's public libraries on the path of excellence and modelled citizen participation in governance by volunteering thousands of hours where he shared his experience," said Pedak Kari, who nominated Singh for the award.
Before Singh went to the US, he had served at the American Resource Center in India for over 30 years.
