Tea from India has received tremendous response from the Olympics village in London, R Ambalavanan, Executive Director of Tea Board of India, told reporters here.

"Indian Tea has really won a gold medal at London Olympics," he said.

There was good enquiry and response for Indian tea in the stall put up by the Board there and visitors were given tea for tasting and also small gift package, as part of promoting tea across the world, he said.

Besides, a London company has shown keen interest in a tie-up with Glendale Tea Estate here, to sell its premium tea, which was sold for Rs. 2,600 per kg in India, he said.

As part of satellite mapping of tea estates in India, the Board has completed the task in north and would commence it in south, Ambalavanan said,

If all the 215 tea companies and estates come under the map, it would help in compiling data, which would be helpful, like knowing the grade of tea and also disease attacking the leaf.
