Indian workers, who could not get promised jobs after coming here on visit visas or forced to take up menial work, are eyeing work in Iraq, despite travel ban by the Indian government.
Indian consulate sources said companies in the UAE are aware of the ban imposed in 2004 after the abduction of three truck drivers in war-torn Iraq in 2004.
The consulate, last week, received complaints from two men from Uttar Pradesh, who were brought to Dubai on a visit visa and forced to travel to Iraq by agents on forged papers.
Unscrupulous agents still manage to transport desperate jobless men to Iraq through Kuwait using illegal routes, Gulf News reported.
Last week two Indians from Punjab and three from Kerala, working for a Kuwait company transporting cargo to Iraq, were reported missing.
"I am ready to take the risk of going to Iraq and working there for a few months and then going back to India,"" said Ratan Lal Singh, 30, a commerce degree holder who now works as a cleaner.
M Rajan, a diploma holder working as a domestic help, said an agent had promised him a job as a driver in a company in Iraq for 700 dollars a month if he paid a commission of 2,000 dirhams.
