According to a local police official, an initial investigation suggested that the militant, Waheed-ur-Rehman Khan, was carrying the grenade.

“He was must have triggered the grenade himself as we found a live grenade on him,” said Abdul Qayoom, superintendent of police of Sopore.

“Somebody must have handed him the grenade in the court premises,'' Qayoom added.

Khan, a resident of Pakistan who was arrested in 2010, was being taken back to the central jail in Srinagar after attending a court hearing in Sopore.

The blast occurred when the police vehicle transporting Khan was passing through Hygam area of Sopore.

Sopore has been in the news for a series of mysterious killings since May 25. Unidentified gunmen have killed six people in the town.
