The multiple Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor fell in love with God of Carnage during a performance in London, and approached producers to cast him.
"I inquired as to whether they were moving it [to New York]," the New York Daily News quoted James, as saying.
"They said they were, and I begged to be in it, and they said, ''OK, you can do it,” he added.
Gandolfini will star alongside Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in the play, about two warring couples, which kicks off its New York run next Month (Mar 09).
