In a statement in Chennai, she said the people of the state were prepared to get rid of the "hand that supported the killings of Tamils", apparently referring to the election symbol (the hand) of Congress.

"Karunanidhi has announced that he would not part ways with the hand that is accused of supporting the killing of Tamils...But the people of the state are prepared to get rid of the two (parties)," Jayalalithaa said.

She also demanded that Karunanidhi should immediately urge the Centre to press for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka and "thus express his genuine concerns for the Tamils". Jayalalithaa said had Karunanidhi withdrawn his support to the Congress-led UPA, "the Centre's aid against Tamils" would have been stopped itself.
