Journalism students in Chennai will team up with their counterparts from around the world for the Global News Relay - a 12 hour rolling news programme that will travel across the globe.
Chennai will pick up the baton at the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) for the relay between 3pm and 4pm for the continuous news marathon which will start at 9am (3:30am GMT) on Thursday.
The unique broadcast will move from country to country with each host organisation transmitting for up to two hours at a time. Joining ACJ are Salford University in UK, RMIT in Australia, West Texas A&M University in US, Manipal University in Dubai and Volda University College in Norway.
Topics covered during the broadcasting marathon will include Indian general elections, economy, culture, social media, fashion, gay marriage and the Salford Music Festival.
"The aim of the project is to engage students with the concept of global news and bring them together to work collaboratively on a single journalistic assignment," says Sarah Jones, project co-ordinator and journalism lecturer at Salford University.
"It will develop innovative methods of broadcasting internationally and encourage the students to reflect on news around the world, as well as getting an insight into the variations in culture and news techniques," she adds.
