Jubilation in Hyderabad and agitation in Vijayawada marked the first anniversary of the formation of Telangana and residual Andhra Pradesh on June 2 last year with Telangana spending about Rs 20 crore for the week-long festivities and AP demanding justice for the divided state.

Telangana celebrated its statehood, achieved after a six-decade-long struggle, at the Secunderabad parade grounds where the united AP formation day events used to be held on November 1.

Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said that they have proved wrong the sceptics who predicted that Telangana would be a failed state. “We have attracted Rs 91,000 crore investments. We are building big power projects and by 2018, I promise 24 hour power supply to all sectors... We are spending Rs 28,000 crore on the welfare of poor,” Rao said.

On the other side of the divide, in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu led a rally named NavaNirmana Deeksha (mission reconstruction).

Naidu rekindled the sore memories of the bifurcation events for Seemandhra people. “A state was announced as a birthday gift of the Congress leader. And AP was divided with Parliament doors closed. There was no justice in what happened to us. We are now without resources and a capital,” Naidu said.
