Pakistan's military leadership on Saturday kept up its criticism of the Indian Army chief's reported comments on a "two-front war," with a top official saying the remarks betrayed a "lack of strategic acumen".
Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Gen Tariq Majid said he doubted the "veracity of an Indian media report" that purportedly quoted Indian Army chief Gen Deepak Kapoor as saying that his force was planning for a "two-front war," involving Pakistan and China.
"He (Kapoor) could not be so outlandish in strategic postulations to fix India on a self-destruct mechanism.
"But if the news report is correct, the uncalled-for rhetoric only betrays lack of strategic acumen," Majid was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations.
Responding to Kapoor's purported "jingoistic" pronouncement, Majid said: "Leave alone China, Gen Deepak Kapoor knows very well what the Indian armed forces cannot and Pakistan armed forces can pull off militarily".
In an apparent reaction to Kapoor's reported comments, Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani yesterday said his force is capable of defeating any aggressive design or "cold start doctrine".
