‘Kasab calm; shows no fear or remorse’

Instead, the 21-year-old alleged Pakistani national has been telling Arthur Road Jail personnel “maine jo kiya achchha kiya (Whatever I did was good)”, jail sources told HT on condition of anonymity.

Kasab has been shifted to the jail for the test identification parade. Several witnesses have identified him before a special judicial magistrate. A witness who participated in the parade on Sunday said, on condition of anonymity, that it was being conducted in an open hall within the jail premises where policemen connected with the investigation were not allowed.

Explaining the process, the witness said the parade was held before a magistrate and two panch witnesses. Kasab was lined up with six identically dressed people and the witness was called in to identify him.

“The magistrate told me that one of the people present is an accused who fired indiscriminately in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on November 26 and asked me whether I can identify him,” he said. “I moved forward and touched and pointed towards him.”

Kasab was composed, he said. “The young man clad in t-shirt and pants was dressed identically to the other people standing with him.” He was not tall but had a “strong, well-built body”, the witness said. “Every time after the identification the magistrate would ask the terrorist his name, he would shout ‘Ajmal Amir Kasab’.”

Kasab is being identified primarily in connection with three cases — the killings at CST, the encounter at Girgaum Chowpatty and hijacking of a Skoda owned by hotelier S R Arasa.
