Many of the relatives of those killed in the Kalka Mail accident had to travel from Kanpur to Allahabad or the other way round on Tuesday to recover the bodies of the deceased.
The reason for this is that the unclaimed bodies have been sent to either of the two cities. Advocate Awadhesh Kumar came from Baghpat in western UP to identify the body of a family member who died in the accident on Sunday.
He first visited MLN Medical College in Allahabad, and then the Tej Bahadur Sapru (Beli) Hospital. He was unsuccessful at both the places.
“The advocate could not identify the body. Now he has to rush to Kanpur. He was in a trauma because it’s not easy to recognise the mutilated bodies,” said Dr VK Pandey, chief medical superintendent (CMS), Beli Hospital.
“They are first rushing to Fatehpur, from where they are either going to Kanpur or to Allahabad to search for the bodies. This is taking a lot of time. Moreover, the bodies cannot be kept at a mortuary for more than 72 hours. After that they need to be disposed of,” he added.
The CMS also said it was possible some bodies of people of the same family were sent to Kanpur and some to Allahabad.
