LAKHS OF devotees on Sunday took holy dip in the Saryu and the Ganga on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. People belonging to Ayodhya and its adjoining places began to gather on the banks of the Saryu from dawn.
After the holy dip, they visited various the temples in Ayodhya where week-long Kartik Mela today was being organised. The main attraction of the devotees were famous Hanumangarhi temple, Kanak Bhawan, Nageshwar Nath Shiva temple and makeshift structure in the acquired land of the disputed shrine.
Timing for the entry to the dispute site was extended by two hours during the mela period.
Many voluntary organsations like Rotary Club, Jaycees Club set up service camps at the mela site to provide medical and other help to the devotees.
However, there was no untoward incident during mela, according to official sources.
In Varanasi, different ghats of the Ganga, such as Assi, Bhadaini, Anand Mai, Dashashwemedh, Rajendra Prasad and Panchganga ghats, witnessed an unprecedented rush of devotees engaged in taking holy dip in river.
Later, devotees donated food grains, clothes and money to Brahmins, pandits and others. The devotees also visited different temples.
The devotees from different parts of Varanasi and its adjoining areas began to gather on the banks of Ganga from daybreak. Besides, people from from different parts of eastern UP arrived in the holy city two days before Kartik Purnima for holy dip.

The busses and tractor-trolleys were parked on the outskirts of Varanasi. A large number of temporary shops were set up to sell sweets and puja items.
