Former Dy PM Devi Lal's third generation is now jostling for Jat votes in Haryana.

He had special interest in rural causes, welfare of farmers and villagers. Chaudhary Devi Lal joined the freedom movement in 1929 at the age of 15.

He served as Chief Minister of Haryana for two terms between 1977 and 1980 and 1987 and 1989.

The Jat leader made his maiden entry to Lok Sabha in 1980 and was re-elected in 1989, when he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in the National Front government.

Power took this man to New Delhi, but it didn't take the village out of him till the end.

The tale of how VP Singh brought down Rajiv Gandhi government over the Bofors issue is well chronicled. But not much is recalled of Devi Lal's own role in the campaign against Rajiv Gandhi.
