Landslide in Chembur leaves 6-year-old boy dead in shanty

As incessant rains hit the city, a six-year-old died on Thursday morning at Vashi Naka in Chembur when a boulder fell on the shanty he used to live in.

As incessant rains hit the city, a six-year-old died on Thursday morning at Vashi Naka in Chembur when a boulder fell on the shanty he used to live in.

According to the police, the deceased Ganesh Kurhade, lived in the shanty with his parents and two siblings.

“The incident occurred around 8.30 am when a landslide was reported at Sahyadri Nagar in Vashi Naka. A huge boulder fell on the shanty and Ganesh, who was sleeping got trapped. Others in the family were having breakfast and they escaped unhurt in the incident,” said Dilip Raut, senior police inspector, RCF police station. “The boy was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.”

The civic body had also sent notices to the shanties to vacate the area as it was landslide prone.

“We had served notices before the monsoons to all families residing in the area, to immediately vacate the place. However no one paid attention to the notice. Following the incident, we have provided temporary accommodation to all the seven families in a municipal school in Maroli village,” said Kiran Dighavkar, ward officer.
