It will be a virtual Bangla Bandh on April 30 as the Left Front has called for a 12-hour (6am to 6pm) general strike to protest poll violence during the municipal elections, coupled with a day-long strike by trade unions.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose said, “We have given a call for 12-hour general strike in Bengal and have asked for support from SUCI and Liberation. Municipal elections in Bengal have turned into a mockery of democracy.”
Four Left trade unions – CITU, AITUC, TUCC and UTUC along with support from INTUC and RSS backed HMS too called a 24-hour general strike in protest of politics of terror during the elections. “We cannot sit back and see the ruling party’s hooliganism. We are protesting through a state-wide 24-hour general strike and ask for the support of the public,” Dipak Dasgupta, CITU state secretary said.
On the same day, 12 central trade unions have called for an All India transport strike to protest the new transport laws that will curb the rights of transport workers. Rail roko too would be part of the general strike.
The Left Front has demanded re-polling in 375 booths in 91 municipal body polls, the state election commission has only ordered re-poll in 36 polls.
