Lesbian couple returns home as family accepts marriage

The lesbian couple from Uttar Pradesh, who had been staying here in a “safe house” under police protection, finally left for their hometown on Tuesday along with their parents who granted them “pardon” and accepted their relationship.

Beena Dhama and Savita, hailing from Bagpat district, appeared in a Gurgaon court and requested for withdrawal of police protection as well as the case against their relatives who were earlier threatening to kill them.

“Threat on their lives is now gone as the parents have accepted their marriage. On Tuesday they withdrew their petition on the threat perception from their relatives from the court of additional district and sessions judge Vimal Kumar and sought removal of police protection,” the couple’s lawyer Durgesh Boken said.

Beena (22) and Savita (24), had been staying in the premises of the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) since July 25 after getting married in a court here.

“We are a happy couple as now the parents and other relatives of Savita too have agreed to accept our relationship. My parents had already accepted our relationship. We have withdrawn our petition against our relatives,” said Beena.
