Hardly a fortnight after horrendous incident in Chhattisgarh, where eight women lost their lives and about fifty women were hospitalised in serious condition, a sterilisation camp of a similar kind was conducted in Ghuvara panchayat of Chhatarpur district. About 132 women were reportedly operated upon in five hours, that too at night. Thankfully, no untoward incident has been reported yet.

According to media reports, a sterilisation camp was organised at Ghuvara, 339 km from state capital on Saturday. Senior officials in Ghuvara accept that the family planning camp was organised by the government authorities but refused to speak on record.

Block medical officer, JP Yadav said Dr Geeta Chaurasia performed the sterilisation surgeries, which started at 9pm on Saturday and continued till about 2am late night. He could not give reasons for carrying out surgeries at night. However, sources say arrangements like stretchers and beds etc too were not available in sufficient numbers.

The incident happened on Saturday, while the state government came out with a statement on Monday, claiming that family planning programmes in Madhya Pradesh are not target-based and are self-motivated.
