Gifted with expressive eyes and trenchant talent, Mahie Gill got her first break with the Punjabi based Bollywood film Hawayein and has done a couple of Punjabi films along with theatre.
But the real boost for her career came with Anurag Kashyap's Dev D. She gave Paro a dimension as yet unexplored - edgy and sexy. She also won the 2010 Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for her role which she well deserved.
Anurag first saw her at a party and instantly finalized her to play the character of Paro in his opus.
She has worked in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Not a Love Story' which was based on true story of Niraj Grover Murder case of 2008. She also worked in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster with Jimmy Shergill and Randeep Hooda which was released in 2011. In 2013 she reprised her role in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. This movie earned her a nomination at the Filmfare awards for best actress. Gill has also appeared in Paan Singh Tomar with Irrfan Khan. It was a true story of an athlete who became a dacoit. In this, she played the character of Paan Singh Tomar's wife.
Film critic Rajeev Masand said "Not a Love Story is voyeuristic and exploitative, and shamelessly borders on soft-porn. It’s saved to some extent by a credible performance from Mahie Gill, who succeeds in humanizing her character despite the odds that are stacked against her". For her performance in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster, Tarash Adarsh said "Mahie shines in a role that seems tailor-made for her. She's excellent as the neglected biwi and also someone who seeks refuge in another man to satisfy her physical needs. It won't be erroneous to say that she outdoes her previous performances and excels in a rather complex role".
