Mahalia Nayak (56) of Guhalipal village, more than 100 km west of Bhubaneswar, allegedly attacked his wife Janha Nayak (54) on Wednesday night with a sharp edged weapon when she was asleep.

"We have arrested Nayak on the basis of a complaint lodged by the couple's eldest daughter. He has confessed to the crime," Hindol police station in-charge Dasarathi Nath said.

Nayak, a landless labourer, and his wife were living alone in the house. The couple's three children - two daughters and one son - are all married.

His son has migrated to Tamil Nadu for work, leaving his wife at her parents' place.

The argument between the couple started on Monday morning after Nayak shouted at his wife for not serving tea on time. As he continued to quarrel with her for the next two days, she also refused to cook food for him as a protest.

She also complained about their quarrel to her son over telephone. Her defiance enraged Nayak further and he killed her.
